Three-year veteran WR/KR, Jacoby Jones, was cut by the Baltimore Ravens on February 25. Jones was an important piece to the Ravens’ Super Bowl run and victory, in 2012. If it wasn’t for his miraculous touchdown catch in the divisional round against the Denver Broncos, in the 2012 playoffs, best known for the “Mile High Miracle”, the Ravens would have never gone to the Super Bowl. Jones’s stats at wide receiver in the 2012 season include 30 receptions for 406 yards and 1 touchdown and at kick returner he had 38 returns for 1,167 yards and 2 touchdowns. As years have by, Jones’s success level has gone down. By the end of the 2014 season Jones lost four fumbles. He also rarely played wide receiver. Jones had 9 receptions for 131 yards as a wide receiver in 2014. One might ask why the Ravens cut him now if he was a valuable weapon in the past. Here is the reason:
The NFL is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league. This means that it does not matter what the player did in the past, it only matter what he is doing now. Since Jones has not been as productive lately, he got released. Another reason the Ravens released Jones is because of their salary cap. Jones’s cap hit was $3.3 million and the Ravens are trying to save cap space for players like Justin Forsett and Torrey Smith. At least the Ravens gave Jones a chance to get onto another team. If the Ravens were to release Jones at to end of June, he would have little time to try to get onto another team.
Jacoby Jones will always be a celebrated player for the Ravens. He made the most magnificent plays when it mattered. All of Ravens nation knows they owe Jacoby Jones a thank you.
