A Bright Future Ahead for the Red Sox
By Blake Monachino Edited by Mike Fallas
The Red Sox had an awful 2014 season. Boston ended the year with a sickening record of 71 wins and 91 losses. Last season was only two additional wins, than they held during the horrific Bobby Valentine season. The previous season was a disappointment to all Red Sox fans that held high hopes for for their team. Boston did not do nearly enough, to please Red Sox sports fans who expected a great seasons from them. Boston will need to revive their club, going into the next season.
During the offseason, the Red Sox acquired two crucial pieces to the offense. They signed the ex Giant, Pablo Sandoval (aka the Kung fu panda), to a gigantic five year, $95 million contract. Sandoval is one of the best hitting, third-baseman in the MLB. In his seven year career, Sandoval has hit 106 home runs, and recorded a batting average of .294, which is an outstanding career batting average, that can go for any position. Although he is slightly heavier than most other MLB players, his weight doesn't keep him from being one of the best athletes in the league.
The Red Sox also signed Hanley Ramirez, who started his career as a top Red Sox prospect. He also has history playing for the Miami Marlins and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This year, Ramirez will be playing his first season in left field. In the past, Ramirez has mostly played at shortstop. However, he also has experience playing third for a short period of time. Like Sandoval, Ramirez has a lot of power. In his career he has recorded an outstanding 191 home runs. Ramirez can prove to be a key player in white and red.
With the additions of Sandoval and Ramirez, the Red Sox line, has been named one of the best lineups in the league. The lineup will most likely contain, Mookie Betts, Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval, Mike Napoli, Rusney Castillo, Xander Bogaerts, and Christian Vasquez.
On the other hand, the pitching rotation isn't looking too hot. During the offseason, Boston made some trades for pitchers. The Red Sox traded away Yoenis Cespedes to the Detroit Tigers, in exchange for starting pitcher, Rick Porcello. They also traded Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster, and Reymel Flores to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Wade Miley. The Sox also added pitcher Justin Masterson, who like Hanley Ramirez, has history playing for the Red Sox in the past. The rest of the rotation consists of Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
If Boston's lineup hits like its projected to, many people have the Sox as a contender in not only the AL east, but the entire American League. There has also been rumors that the team may make a trade with the Phillies to receive Cole Hamels. If Boston, indeed signs him for the correct price, they could possibly end up becoming World Series contenders.
With all the new additions to the team, it is almost guaranteed that the Boston Red Sox will do much better than their previous season.
