On March 10th, the first day of the 2015 NFL season, Baltimore Ravens Nose Tackle, Haloti Ngata, and a seventh-round draft pick got dealt to the Detroit Lions. In exchange, the Ravens will get the Lions’ fourth and fifth-round draft picks in the 2015 NFL Draft.
The Lions may have benefited in talent by replacing Ndamukong Suh with Ngata, but they will subsequently be slammed with an $8.5 million cap hit. Suh was one of the Lions’ most valuable players, but since he became a free agent, the Miami Dolphins broke the bank to sign him to their roster. It’s not really bad news for Detroit, as Ngata might actually be a better fit for the Lions. Ngata’s experience and knowledge of the game definitely gives him a large advantage over Suh. Last year, the Ravens were ranked fourth in run defense with 88.3 rush yards allowed per game. The Lions were ranked best in the NFL at rush defense, only letting up 69.3 rush yards per game. When Ngata settles with the team, he could make the defense way better than it was last year.
Since the Lions are adding a new player to the roster, they will have to get an $8.5 million cap hit. This means that they now have substantially less money to spend on more players in free agency. The Lion are now, most likely, not going to sign any top players.
The Ravens, on the other hand, freed $8.5 million of cap space as a result of this trade. Before, the Ravens were being suffocated by a very tight cap space. Because of their shortage of capital, the Ravens had to cut numerous players including the fan favorite, Jacoby Jones. Obviously, there will always be a negative in a trade, and in this case it is losing nine-year veteran, Haloti Ngata. Drafted in 2006, Ngata changed the Ravens defense immensely with his prodigious size and talent. If it were not for the five-time pro bowler (2009-2013), the Ravens would never be where they are at today.
