The Falcons have decided to part ways, with veteran running back, Steven Jackson on February 26, 2014. Although Jackson has developed an amazing career for himself, rushing for 1000 yards in 8 of his 11 seasons, his age is beginning to catch up to him as he has not rushed for 1000 yards in two straight seasons. Jackson has also had to endure tough injurys that have set him back. Jackson has been with the Falcons organization for two years and is heading to into the last year of his three-year contract. During his years with the Falcons, Jackson has rushed for a total of 1,250 yards. Jackson’s career rushing yards is 11,385 on the ground. The Rams chose Jackson in the first round of the 2004 draft. After his first season as a Ram, Jackson proved he was one of the best, and most physical players in the NFL. Moreover, in Jackson’s 8 out of 9 years with the Rams He received 1,000 plus yard years. The Rams cut Jackson after the 2012 season. Thus, the Falcons signed Jackson to a three year contract due to his fit into their running scheme.
Cutting Steven Jackson was not a personation decision; it was more of a financial one. Even though Jackson was the most aggressive back out there, the Falcons could not keep him on the team any longer. The Falcons have limited cap space and if they were to keep Jackson it would limit their chances of signing a crucial free agent even more. The Falcons saved $3.75 million by cutting Jackson.
In conclusion, by cutting Jackson, the Falcons have a better opportunity to get better players in free agency.
