The big name signings have come to an end for the New York Jets in free agency for 2015. Jets General Manager, Mike Maccagnan had promised prior to its start, the Jets were "active players" in the market. They made a big splash in the top tier market, and are slowly working their way through the secondary market as well.
The Jets solidified their secondary, bolstered their offensive line, and added some depth to the defensive line through free agency so far. They also added a veteran QB and WR via the trade market. The Jet's have been busy!
Since last year's dismal 4 - 12 finish, the Jets organization has set out on a mission to "right the ship". In place are a new general manager, head coach, offensive coordinator, and assistant coaching staff. The team made moves in free agency, via trades, and off the wire to improve the roster. It doesn't end there, however. The good news for fans is that the Jets still have the NFL Draft to look forward to!
The 2015 version of the NFL draft holds some nice depth at positions the Jets may be looking to address, or even revisit. The Jets currently own picks in each of the first four rounds, and two seventh round selections. They have been rumored to be looking to find a trade partner for their first round pick, which would allow them to add additional picks. It should be noted that they are strictly rumors, and the Jets are just as likely to choose a player with the sixth overall pick.
Wide Receiver is a fairly deep draft class once again this year. It may not hold as much top end potential as last season's group of wideouts, but there will be significant talent to be had well into the third round. Its a position the Jets will likely spend a draft pick on, but its too early to say in what round they might be doing it. The signing of the explosive Brandon Marshall went a long way towards returning the Jets wide receiver group to respectability. The Jets will need to add to the depth, and build for the future at the position. The draft is the best place to do that.
Pass Rushers are another group of players that are well represented in this year's draft. Many Mocks have the better part of the first round being dedicated to the talent coming out this season. As is any year, stocks will rise and fall, and at this point it's anyone's guess how it plays out come draft day. Make no mistake though, there will be talent remaining into the second round and possibly beyond. A solid well rounded OLB would be a huge addition to the current Jet roster. The Jets need for a pass rushing LB has been well discussed among fans. What hasn't been discussed very much is their need for a OLB with speed and coverage skills. The top pass rushers in this year's draft tend to be pure rushers. The Jets need is a bit more than that. It will be interesting to see how Bowles sees his need there come draft day.
Running Back is yet another exciting position being represented in this year's version of the draft. The Jet need here is being debated among Jet fans at length lately. The draft offers considerable talent for teams in the market. Talent extends into the mid rounds, and the Jets may or may not be looking to add a running back this season. Chris Johnson wasn't pursued in free agency by the Jets, and Chris Ivory will be a free agent after this year. That is the leading argument for the team to draft a back this season. The other side of the argument seems to be that the team already has Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, and Richardson in place. Chan Gailey's needs at the position will determine the priority set by the team at the position. It promises to be an interesting watch.
Offensive lineman have been a highly touted group in this year's draft. The Jets went to the well in free agency twice, signing James Brewer and James Carpenter. Carpenter can be seen as an upgrade, while Brewer a much more of a depth signing. It's a position the Jets will likely revisit in the draft as well. The Jet O line is aging and another young promising OL would be a wise addition.
The good news here for the Jets is that there positions of need match up very well with this year's draft strengths! The Jets have already made significant upgrades to this year's roster and they aren't done yet. The draft holds even more opportunities for Mike Maccagnan and his staff to improve on what they have already put together.
It’s still a bit early to tell exactly what the names will be at any given position. It's even too early to predict what the draft strategy will be. The Jets braintrust will be hard at work, looking for ways to best improve the roster heading towards the daft. Mike Maccagnan is a scouting guy, the Jets should be in good hands when they get there.
