The Jets have been extremely active in free agency this year. New York Jets, General Manager, Mike Maccagnan came out very aggressive, targeting some big names and finishing a deal with them. In less than a week, the Jets have spent the bulk of the $50 million they had available to them in cap space. The talk among fans has constantly been about the new additions, and how they are going to contribute to this remastered Jets team. The Jets signed some key players, and it is the beginning of an exciting time to be a Jet fan once again.
Without a doubt, Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, James Carpenter, Brandon Marshall, Buster Skrine, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Marcus Gilchrist, will go a long way in repairing a lackluster roster the Jets had last season. They all bring in a specific skill set with them that can upgrade what the Jets had the previous season, with their positions. It's been said that "You Don't Win in March", and some fans will absolutely agree. This is an extremely exciting time for Jets fans, however, the new players will need a great supporting cast, if they want to achieve success. The Jets will need to take hold of some young talent on the roster to step up and play at the NFL level. Jets fans like what Maccagnan has done with this roster. He brought in a group of veterans to contribute, but also to mentor the younger players. The Jets lacked that veteran presence last season, and Maccagnan promptly fixed that situation.
His signing of both Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie was quite the coup. One in which most analysts said couldn't be done. The signings are key, as they will allow Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle to get healthy and learn from some of the top corners in the league.
Beyond that, they will be there to work with the stable of Jet corners. Players like Curtis Brown (a third year man the Jets grabbed from the Steelers) and Keith Lewis are other players that will benefit hugely from working with Cromartie and Revis.
Darrin Walls remains a Jet as well. Many have criticized his play last season, but he is a veteran that can also derive benefits from the Revis and Cromartie signing. Walls best efforts came as a backup player behind Cromartie. Walls can rejuvenate his game under their tutelage and slide back into being a rotational type contributor.
The Jets have a plethora of young players that offer potential behind the big name corners the Jets recently added. Expect some great competitions when its time to hit training camp and the preseason. There might even be some surprises when its all said and done.
Shifting over to offense, the Jets have made some significant additions to a beleaguered unit last season. There have been some grumblings from fans, that the Jets haven't done enough offensively in free agency. However, those criticisms are unfair. Maccagnan has been smart offensively so far, and may still not be done. Maccagnan went out and brought in Brandon Marshall. He did it at the price of a 5th round pick. Some fans may not be happy about trading picks away for players, but a fifth rounder for Brandon Marshall is a steal! Marshall will make an immediate impact to the Jets offense. he'll also be a mentor for the Jets wideouts behind him.
Like him or not, Marshall is a great guy to learn from. He has one of the better route trees among NFL wide receivers. He's disciplined in running routes, and uses his body well to gain separation. If he can teach that to some of younger guys, the Jets will be vastly improved. Fans may be high on Chris Owusu and Quincy Enunwa this season, going into camp. Both possess speed, and if they can learn from the likes of Decker and Marshall, the Jets have the potential to field a very good group of wide receivers this year. Also looking to learn are, Shaq Evans, Saalim Hakim, T.J. Graham, and Walter Powell. Mike Maccagnan brought in Marshall to team up with Decker and Kerley and provide veteran leadership for the Jets young receivers.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was brought in for a 7th round pick in 2016. While many fans didn't like this move, but others think its perfect. The move also shows Maccagnan is working well with his staff. This signing had Chan Gailey written all over it. The signing of Fitzpatrick was a good one though. It reunites Chan Gailey with a QB he had success with in Buffalo. We know Fitzpatrick can run Gailey's system, and with that knowledge he can help Geno Smith learn the game. Gailey is reportedly going to run a spread type offense. It's a system Smith ran quite efficiently in college. Fitzpatrick is there to challenge Smith. He has the skill set to replace him as the Jet starter. It will be an open competition in camp and the best man wins. That being said, Fitzpatrick can offer Smith an abundance of experience. Fitzpatrick was never an elite type QB, but he has the skill set to be a great mentor at this point in his career. Smith would be wise to learn from what Fitzpatrick has to offer. there is no guarantee who the starter will be come day 1, however. Maccagnan as a first time GM is listening to his staff's needs. Maccagnan did a great job with the Fitzpatrick trade, and it was a smart football decision.
While nobody knows what the Jets plans are for the QB position going ahead, they may or may not draft another QB this season. The Jets may add another QB off the wire later into the offseason. Fans simply don't know what the plan will be yet.
James Carpenter was added on the offensive side as well. He comes over from the Seattle Seahawks, marking the second year in a row the Jets have targeted a Seattle offensive lineman; signing Brent Giacomini last season.
Carpenter is a former first round pick of the Seahawks, chosen 25th overall in the 2011 NFL draft. Carpenter has struggled with some conditioning issues through his career, the result has been a string of injuries that have slowed his development. Carpenter is young though, just at 26 year old, coming off his 4th NFL season. Carpenter is an immediate upgrade over Willie Colon. However, with Colon's resigning, the Jets may have other plans for him.
Carpenter and Colon bring a ton of experience to the table for the Jets. Young players like Oday Aboushi, Dakota Dozier, and Sean Hooey can learn from them. The young Jets players also have Ferguson and Mangold to learn from as well. Expect some interesting competitions along the offensive line this summer. The Jets young OL could make some noise.
Mike Maccagnan has shown he has a plan for rebuilding this team. He's made some good trades, and signed some big names. He's provided veteran leadership to the Jet younger players. He's set the young guys up to learn from some very talented veterans. It would appear, Mike Maccagnan knows how to develop talent.
The Jets possess some very promising young talent. Some of that talent has been slow to develop, but some fans would lay some of that blame on the former coaching staff. Luckily for the Jets, they have a new and rebounded regime in town.
With still more talent coming in this year's draft, the young players the Jets hold on their roster are set up to make some noise. The tools are in place to allow them to succeed. While everyone else may be excited about the free agent signings, they should also be high on some of the Jets youth.
Don't overlook these guys. the Jets can help themselves in free agency, but they need youth to develop if they want to win consistently. Now the coaches must develop the talent. Veterans are in place to hold down the fort until the younger guys are ready. The Jets are set up to develop talent, something fans have seen very little as of late.
Exciting times have returned to Jet fans. They should be amped up about the big name additions, but they shouldn't overlook the young guys.
