On February 16th, the New York Yankees announced that they will be retiring Andy Pettitte, Bernie Williams, and Jorge Posada's uniforms in 2015. Most Yankees fans would say that they deserve to have their uniforms retired in Yankee Stadium. This is a bad idea, though.
The Yankees should only be retiring Hall Of Fame players, and neither Pettitte, Posada, nor Williams are Hall Of Famers. In fact, the Yankees should have never retired Ron Guidry and Don Mattingly's uniforms. Admittedly, Pettitte, Posada, and Williams should be honored by the Yankees with a plaque in Monument Park, however. There is no way that the Yankees would have won the 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 World Series’ without these three superstars. They will always make up a huge part of Yankees history, and for that, they should be given a plaque. So far, the Yankees have retired 19 uniforms and they are now retiring Pettitte, Posada, Williams, and soon Jeter’s. If the Yankees continue to retire uniforms like this, players will soon be wearing triple digit jersey numbers. Jeter definitely deserves to have his number retired in Yankees Stadium, as he has been a Major League Baseball icon for 20 years. The Yankees need to be more selective with who’s uniform they retire.
